In plain words, a flash mob is an action agreed in advance that a group of people perform at the same time, unexpectedly for everyone else. Originally it meant street stunts: strangers gathered in a square, did something odd and dispersed. At celebrations, a flash mob is a surprise from the guests: a dance, a song, a shared action.
Flash mob ideas for a celebration
- Dance. Guests join in one by one to the music until the whole room is dancing. A couple of rehearsals needed
- Song. Suddenly the whole room sings for the birthday person or couple. Lyrics can go on cards
- Freeze. On a signal all guests freeze, a minute later carry on as if nothing happened
- Cards. Guests hold up cards that form a phrase or picture
- Light. On a signal the whole room switches on phone flashlights. The simplest option, works with no rehearsal
A graduation flash mob
At a graduation the flash mob is done by graduates for teachers or by parents for graduates. A parents’ flash mob is usually a dance: a few rehearsals in the school hall, costumes or matching T-shirts, an appearance mid-evening. It is always touching but takes time and courage. If you cannot get parents to rehearse, a light flash mob works: participants need no preparation. The full evening script is in the graduation script.
A flash mob for an anniversary or birthday
For an anniversary quiet flash mobs work well: all guests hold up photos of the person over the years or sing their favourite song. For a birthday among friends you can be bolder: a shared dance, matching masks, a sudden freeze. More party ideas in a birthday show.
A flashlight flash mob
At concerts and stadiums people raise flashlights on their own, without any agreement. The problem is that each shines as they please, and the effect is random. We make this flash mob synchronised. Guests scan a QR code, and every flashlight in the room flashes together to the music, runs in waves, lights up by group. Commands travel via ultrasound from the speakers, so no app or internet is needed.
We ran such a concert flash mob for Pavel Pikovsky and Vasily Urievsky, and stadium flash mobs for Krylia Sovetov. At celebrations it goes on the first dance, the cake or the finale. From 10,000 ₽ per event for up to 100 guests.
How to make a flash mob work
- One organiser who knows the plan and gives the signal
- A simple action: the more complex, the fewer people join
- A signal everyone hears: music, a line from the host, lights going out
- Someone with a camera who knows where to film
- Short duration: 1–3 minutes
FAQ
Does a light flash mob need a rehearsal? No. A minute and a half ahead the host asks everyone to scan the code, and the track does the rest.
Can it be combined with a dance flash mob? Yes: dancers in the centre, and the room around them glows with flashlights to the same music.
