A wedding script for the host: the evening structure and where to put the climax

Ready-made wedding scripts found online usually look like a long list of games with the host’s lines. Modern couples turn them down, and hosts have long worked differently: fewer games, more genuine moments, one strong climax.

Below is a wedding evening structure by blocks with approximate timing, advice on pauses and several finale options. The script works as a starting point both for a host and for a couple planning the wedding themselves.

The structure of a wedding evening

  • Guests arrive, 30–60 minutes. Reception, music, photo zone. The host meets guests and remembers the names of key people
  • The couple’s entrance. The couple enters to their track, first applause, seating
  • First toast and introductions. A word from the parents, a short introduction of guests from both sides
  • First dinner block. Toasts alternate with music breaks so guests have time to eat
  • The first dance. Usually 1–1.5 hours in, when everyone has eaten and is ready to watch
  • Dance block and interaction. Table games, speeches from friends, videos
  • The cake. Bringing it out, cutting, the first slice
  • Finale. A shared moment for all guests, thanks to the parents, send-off

Where to leave pauses

Guests come to a wedding to eat, talk and dance. If every 10 minutes there is a new toast or game on the microphone, the room gets tired. A good rule: after each active block, 15–20 minutes of free time with music.

Keep on-stage games to one or two and run them with those who volunteer. For everyone else, table games and polls work: options in the article on wedding interaction.

Where to put the climax

A wedding has three natural high points: the first dance, the cake and the finale. Choose one for the climax and give it the strongest number.

  • The first dance. All guests are still in the room, the photographer and videographer are ready. Good for effects around the couple: smoke, cold sparklers, light
  • The cake. A convenient reason to dim the room. Works well with fewer guests sitting close together
  • The finale. The most emotional moment, but by then some guests are leaving. It should come before people start going home, usually an hour before the venue booking ends

A finale the whole room takes part in

We offer hosts and couples a light show made of guests’ phones. The host asks everyone to scan a QR code on the screen or a table card, guests raise their phones, and the whole room’s flashlights flash to the couple’s song. The couple stands in the middle of a glowing room. No app or internet is needed, the host or DJ runs it.

The room flashes in time with the music, launched from the DJ desk

The host’s line before the show takes under a minute: “Take out your phones, scan the code on the screen and tap Start. When the lights go down, raise your phones.” From 10,000 ₽ per wedding for up to 100 guests, as many runs per evening as you like: for both the first dance and the finale. How to organise a wedding: a short plan

  • 9–12 months before. Date, budget, guest list, venue
  • 6–8 months before. Host, photographer, videographer, decorator
  • 3–4 months before. DJ or band, cake, invitations, show numbers
  • 1 month before. Script meeting with the host, seating plan, timing of the day
  • 1 week before. Final timing to all contractors, coordinator contacts

FAQ

Who writes the wedding script? The host, after meeting the couple. The couple only needs to talk about themselves, their guests and what they definitely do not want.

Does this structure suit a golden wedding anniversary? Yes, only instead of the first dance the central moment becomes the speech from children and grandchildren, and the interaction is better kept calmer.
