Unusual team building: a show the team creates itself

Rope courses, relay races, quizzes and cooking classes: classic team building follows one scheme. Employees are split into teams and made to compete. Some get involved, some just go through the motions, and the introverts pray they will not be dragged into the centre of the circle.

We suggest flipping the scheme: not splitting people into teams, but gathering everyone into one. The whole hall works on a shared goal, and the result is visible immediately, in the most literal sense.

The mechanic: every phone is a pixel

Employees scan a QR code from the screen, a page opens in the browser, and every phone becomes a pixel of a shared light picture. The flashlights of the whole hall flicker in sync with the music: waves, flashes, patterns across the room. Synchronization runs over ultrasound, so no app, internet or equipment is needed; the technology is explained in a separate article.

The meaning for the team is simple: the picture only comes together when everyone takes part. One phone means nothing, while five hundred phones together draw the company logo. It is hard to invent a better metaphor for teamwork, and nobody has to explain it on a flipchart.

The hall creates a shared light show, controlled from the sound desk

Scenarios for a team

  • Department battle: each department lights up with its own colour or cue, and in the finale the whole hall glows together
  • A shared wave: light rolls across the rows like a stadium wave, only made of flashlights
  • The company anthem finale: the hall flickers in time with a track everyone knows, the highlight of the evening
  • Voting with light: the hall answers the host’s questions with flashes, instant feedback without paper forms

How it differs from entertainment

A performers’ act or fireworks are something the team watches. Here the team acts: without a shared rhythm the picture will not come together. At the same time nobody is dragged on stage or forced to compete; joining is easy for an introvert and for the CEO alike. The entry barrier is minimal: everyone has a phone.

Another difference from classic team building: no props, rehearsals or a separate day. The format fits into a corporate party, a conference or a strategy session as a bright 10 minutes, not a separate outing with packing and changing clothes.

Scale: from 30 people to a stadium

The format works in a meeting room, a banquet hall, a conference hall and an arena. We tested the upper limit in practice: at a stadium 27,000 people created the show at once. For a company this means the same format suits a 30-person department and the whole holding at a shared celebration.

How much it costs

From 10,000 ₽ per event for up to 100 participants, the price is fixed, with as many runs per evening as you like. No props to buy, any venue works. Get a quote for your headcount in the price calculator and the pricing article.

FAQ

How much preparation does HR need? Minimal: a screen or printed QR code and sound in the room. We prepare the script and control tracks; the host or DJ launches the show.

Will it fit into an existing party program? Yes, that is the most common scenario: the show becomes the highlight of the evening or an energizer between blocks. More mechanics for a celebration are collected in the article on how to surprise your guests.

Is it a one-off activity or can it be repeated? The mechanics change: a department battle today, a shared picture to the company anthem next year. The format does not wear out, because each time the show is made by the team itself.

The format also works as an immersive finale of a celebration: see the comparison with other immersive formats in the immersive show overview. More about corporate events on the Corporate events and weddings page.
